Pallene: Where Ancient Greece Meets Modern-Day Kassandra

Long before it was Kassandra, this peninsula was called Pallene — and people have been impressed with the place for a very, very long time.
Have you ever wondered what Kassandra (the first leg of Halkidiki) was like thousands of years ago? Long before we knew it as Kassandra, the peninsula was called Pallene — and, as it turns out, people have been pretty impressed with this place for a very, very long time!
Pallene was one of the prosperous regions of ancient Halkidiki, known for its beautiful landscapes, fertile land and thriving communities. And just like today, the sea played a huge part in life here.
The wine of ancient Mende
One of the most fascinating places was the ancient city of Mende, on the western side of the peninsula. Mende was famous for its wine — and not just locally. Its wines were traded throughout the Mediterranean and were well known across the ancient Greek world.
Which makes me smile when I think about Kassandra today. Because, really, how much has changed? People still come here for the sea, the food, the wine, the beautiful landscapes and, of course, the Greek art of gathering together around a table and enjoying a very long evening!
The only difference is that today your guests might be flying in from London, Melbourne or New York rather than arriving by ancient ship. Instead of an ancient feast, you might be planning a welcome dinner under the stars, a wedding overlooking the Aegean, a private celebration at a beautiful villa or a long lunch that somehow turns into dinner. (And in Greece, we really wouldn’t be surprised if it did!)
The things that matter haven’t changed at all
And perhaps that is what I love most about this part of Greece. So much has changed over thousands of years, but the things that matter haven’t really changed at all. We still gather. We still eat. We still drink wine. We still celebrate milestones with the people we love. And we still believe that good food, beautiful surroundings and great company are reasons to stay at the table just a little bit longer.
Why Pallene?
Over the centuries, the name Pallene eventually became Kassandra, but the ancient name has never completely disappeared. For us, Pallene represents something more than a beautiful old name. It represents the history, warmth and hospitality of this place — and the idea that celebrations here are part of something much bigger.
That is why we chose Pallene. We wanted to honour the story of this incredible peninsula while creating celebrations that feel completely at home in Greece today.
Because whether you are standing beside the Aegean with your closest friends, sharing a long Greek dinner with family or dancing beneath the stars, you are taking part in something that people in this part of the world have been doing for thousands of years. Just with slightly better lighting! And maybe a few more cocktails…
