Black, white and silver throughout, carnival dancers after dinner, and a room that did not empty until the music stopped.
A fortieth built around a single decision made early: black, white and silver, and no exceptions. Once a palette is that strict it does the work for you — the dessert table, the cake, the stationery and the lighting all agree with each other without anyone having to think about it again.
The room was kept deliberately dark so that candlelight and the illuminated letters did the lighting, and the food came out passed rather than plated, which keeps people standing and talking instead of sitting down for an hour.
Then, once dinner had settled, carnival dancers came through the room in full feather. It is the kind of thing that sounds like too much on paper and is exactly right on the night.
